Extension Programmes
The school caters for learners needing extension in a variety of ways.
Reading: Students are grouped within their classes. Those who are reading above the level expected for their age and time at school are given opportunities to develop their interpretation skills further - particularly their skills in inferencing or "reading between the lines".
Writing: Again, students are grouped within their classes, although writing groups are often based around a skill or set of skills that particular students need to learn. A group of students who have achieved especially highly make up an extension writers group.
Numeracy: Students are grouped for learning in numeracy. While most students remain with their class teacher, some move to work with another teacher for this part of the curriculum. The emphasis is always on meeting the needs of the learner.
High-achieving year 6, 7 and 8 students and those who show ability in problem solving are able to sit the Otago Problem-Solving tests. There are five of these during the year and they provide a great opportunity for students to apply and extend their mathematical thinking.
The Australasian Mathematics test, run by the University of New South Wales, is another opportunity for students with ability in mathematics to hone their skills. This test takes place in August.
