The Connection

Week 8

Term 3

Huapai District School

September 7th 2023

Senior Leadership Message

Monday morning saw 60 of our Year 6’s and almost as many parents in the hall waiting to board both bus and then boat to attend their camp at Motutapu Island. The week prior we had a group of maths wiz kids delivered home very late having competed in the Auckland Mathex competition. We have so many examples of staff going above and beyond to see opportunities for children. Again, supported by the strength and confidence of our community. Thank you for all the support you bring to the school. Talking about support… we are well on the way to our target of lifting our support rate of school donations. Our current status is (as at 5th September) 63.31%. I remain hopeful we will reach our next goal of 70% before the end of the term - we have promised a pet day!!! I remain hopeful we will continue seeing the support rate rise through the remainder of this school year. Giving our goal of 78% a real shot!!

Thank you for all the support you bring - it makes a huge difference not only financially but also to the culture in our school.

Have a great week.

John Petrie
Principal

Te Reo Māori Interest

We've had some expressions of interest from members of our staff and the wider community around opportunities to learn and practise Te Reo Māori. We've been brainstorming some options around how we might be able to start a regular hui for those who are interested. At this stage, we do not have dates or times, and we are looking to connect with anyone interested in joining us on this journey. Please email Kirstin Robinson at: kirstin.robinson@hds.school.nz

Junior Maths Parent Workshop

In this workshop, we will look at a practical breakdown of number learning for Year 0-3 children. It will focus on learning all basic facts, and the order in which they are best learned, as addition and subtraction sums to 20. It will be an opportunity to ask questions, see how you can implement quick activities at home, and a chance to pick up a few free resources to use with your children.

Please feel free to email Louise, (louise.moss@hds.school.nz) if you have any questions.

General Property Update

We are about to sign a contract to replace much of our existing school roofs. The funds from this is part of monies we receive to manage our buildings.
We have an arborist booked over the break, trimming and reviewing our trees. This was motivated to ensure the health of the trees and also check the safety of the tree area.
We are waiting for dry weather to get contractors on-site to put drainage in the central playground - which is a constant mud-pit at the moment.
We are hoping to sign the astro turf upgrade project before the end of this term.

Day One: Back2School Project Awareness Mufti Day

Thursday 14 September

As a school, we will be participating in Day One: Back2School Project Awareness Day, next Thursday 14th September.

Back2School Project is a non-profit organisation that strives to ensure all primary students, no matter who they are or where they’ve come from, have their exact stationery to start school confident and with a smile from their first day. They are gearing up to help 600 students for the 2024 school year.

In efforts to spread word of the work they do and to support them in their goals, our school will be holding a Mufti Day next Thursday 14th September. On this day, students are asked to EITHER bring in a NEW item of stationery to donate OR a gold coin donation. Items of stationery can include pencils, pencil cases, whiteboard markers, highlighters, pens, rulers, erasers etc…

So, please join us next Thursday and help us to support this amazing charity organisation!

Yummy Apple Sticker Promotion

Each year we have the opportunity to trade in stickers collected from the Yummy apple range for sports gear. This is an annual promotion that has seen the school earn some great gear that is used across the school.

These are due in by the beginning of Week 1, Term 4 (Monday 9th October). Please hand these in to the School Office.

A collection sheet is linked, or each of the classrooms have one on their wall for use at school. Paper copies of the sheet can also be collected from the school office should you need one.

Student Medication

If you child needs to have medication administered while they are at school (antibiotics, asthma inhaler, epi-pen, hay fever tablets etc), please ensure you are dropping these directly to the School Office. As per school policy, we will also need you to complete our Medication Consent Form.
No medications are to be stored in your child's school bag.
If your child attends Huapai Plus in the mornings, please complete this form with them when you are dropping your child and their medication off.

Last School Donation Prize Draw Of 2023

This year we set a pretty ambitious goal of 78% of parents supporting the school through school donation. Our current status (as at 5th September) is 63.31%. We remain hopeful we will pass our next goal of 70% before the end of the term.

As a final incentive, we are offering a Huapai Plus 50% credit voucher to the value of $100 (i.e. book $200 worth of care and only pay $100) AND 6 bottles of NZ wine, with an additional separate prize of 6 bottles of NZ wine. (Bottles of wine sponsored by FujiFilm).

The final prize draw applies to all families who have paid their donations in full by Friday 13th October, with the prize draw notification occurring on Thursday 26th October - just in time for Huapai Plus Christmas holiday bookings and the festive season.

Thank you so much to those that have already paid their school donation for the 2023 school year. Your contribution to the school is very much appreciated.

If you are yet to pay your school donation, you can do so at the link below.
