Senior Leadership Message
Tomorrow we conclude Term 3.
Two days later we shift into daylight saving!
It’s been a busy and full term.
On Monday morning, I listened to Maree Lloyd telling parents gathered to farewell their children for their sports camp words to the effect of “we promise to look after your children, they will be tired, they might even be crying and or even wanting to come home, but know we have got this and we will take great care of your children”.
Two weeks back, on a very bleak and windy day, the same sentiment could have been echoed as the Year 6’s left for camp. For many a first, having missed out on their Year 4 camp due to COVID restrictions.
Thank you for your support, your trust and allowing your children to grow through experiences. As long as we keep children at the centre of what we do and our motivations, they will continue to prosper and shine. Yes, the happiest moment for me is seeing everyone return smiling and safe. Getting kids out into environments and opportunities is so important.
Thank you for all the support we have had this term - it makes a huge difference!

Yummy Apple Sticker Promotion
Each year we have the opportunity to trade in stickers collected from the Yummy apple range for sports gear. This is an annual promotion that has seen the school earn some great gear that is used across the school.
These are due in by the beginning of Week 1, Term 4 (Monday 9th October). Please hand these in to the School Office.
A collection sheet is linked, or each of the classrooms have one on their wall for use at school. Paper copies of the sheet can also be collected from the school office should you need one.

Thank You!
Thank you to everyone who supported our Day One: Back2School Project Awareness Mufti Day last week.
Back2School Project is a non-profit organisation that strives to ensure all primary students, no matter who they are or where they’ve come from, have their exact stationery to start school confident and with a smile from their first day.
Together as a school community, we raised over $500 and collected two large boxes of stationery for this worthwhile charity. Thank you for your support and generosity!

Out-Of-Zone Enrolments For 2024
In reviewing our numbers as we plan for 2024, we believe we are able to offer four (4) out of zone positions in Year 6 (2024). We have a strict enrolment scheme and have been declining out of zone enrolment applications. However, through a ballot process we can offer positions for students where we believe we have space. We will be promoting this through our school facebook, website and through community social media. This is mentioned here in case you are aware of families who have a student who will be in Year 6 next year who might be interested in applying.
Applications close 11th October
Ballot will occur on 16th October
To apply, please download and fill out the form attached below and submit it to: enrolments@hds.school.nz, or refer to our website.

All-Stars Battle Of The Brains
Our Year 5-8 students have been engaged in a battle... a Battle of the Brains! Across the past five weeks, ten teams of eager and enthusiastic students have competed against each other in the hopes of being named Battle of the Brains Champion.
In the Battle of the Brains, each team works collaboratively to answer trivia questions, solve word and number challenges, and put together puzzles. Across two battle rounds, teams discuss, debate, and problem-solve to earn points and the hopes of becoming a Battle of the Brains finalist.
After a fast-paced and action-packed Grand Final, our 2023 Champions emerged, the Year 7-8 Champions - Team Huawhenua and the Year 5-6 Champions - Team Huawhenua 1! CONGRATULATIONS!!
After the final battle was over, with a final score of 40-32, our Year 5-6 Team Huawhenua 1 emerged as our 2023 Battle of the Brains Champion of Champions! YAY!!

Congratulations!
Congratulations to 8 of our Year 4/5/6 boys who were part of a team of 17 Kumeu Rugby boys who travelled to Taupo last weekend to participate in the NZ Junior Rugby Festival.
They have been working hard for month’s fundraising selling raffle tickets, jibbitz & beanies to make this trip possible.
They played Marton, Wests (Wellington), Ponsonby, College Rifles & Clifton Rugby clubs over 3 days and came away with 5 out of 5 wins.
More importantly they created some life long memories with their team mates and enjoyed meeting new ones from all over the country. What an absolutely incredible experience for these boys!
Special mention to coach Russ Wood for all of his hard mahi with the team. Congratulations to Kadyn Abe on being named in the U10 Tournament Team!

Teacher Only Day
Schools were allocated two (2) curriculum days this year and a further 2 in 2024 for curriculum development.
We are proceeding with this and have set this for Tuesday 24th October.
Our thinking is this may present opportunities for parents and also may give some options to alleviate Labour weekend traffic wows.
NB: Labour Weekend is Monday 23rd October.
Huapai + will run a programme on this day for parents requiring support.
