Senior Leadership Message

Welcome to Term 4

Special welcome to our new families and students. Our roll passed 500 this week - currently 502. I so enjoy seeing students return to school and how quickly our new students settle into class. I think this is a great example of the tone and culture we have in the school. Term 4 is always a full term with lots of events, activities and great stuff happening in the classrooms as we build on the learning culture in each room - a great term in front of us!

Over the break we had drainage put in the middle playground and also around the back of the studio block. We have some additional painting in the school hall and replaced the fire exit doors. Great news over the break was that we gained a further $10,000 from Four Winds charities and have been able to sign off on the astroturfing of the main courts. We expect this to happen either late December or early January.

Welcome back!

John Petrie
Principal

Board Meeting

This is being held on Monday 16th October at 6:30pm in the school Staffroom. Parents are welcome to attend.

An Update On The Road Works

This morning Senior Leadership met with Auckland Transport to seek some clarification on the scheduled road works.

Here are the outcomes:
  • The first step in the roadworks will be a widening of the State Highway at the end of Station Road. This is at least 3 weeks away from commencing.
  • Then after this is completed, the work will begin on Station Road.
At this stage, the expected start time for this section of works is 6 weeks away.
At this time, Station Road will move to the one way system with detours in place.
  • Parking near the school on Station Road will be available even during the one way system but if no car parks are available, cars will have to do a loop of the detour to be able to come back past the school again. After a period of time, there will be no parking on Station Road as the works approach the school.
  • During the one way system, cars will be unable to turn right out of Schoolside Rd (by the daycare) and must turn left to enter the detour loops.
  • The current thinking of AT is that they are aiming to finish the rural end of Matua Road road works before starting on the Station Road road works so that a left hand turn out of Trigg could mean entry to homes on the other side of State Highway through rural Matua Rd.
  • At all times during the road works, there will be pedestrian access from the school, down Station Road and under the bridge underpass to the Domain.
Fulton Hogan will be in contact with the school over the next month to update us and we will continue to pass on any communications received.

Teacher Only Day

Tuesday 24th October

Schools were allocated two (2) curriculum days this year and a further 2 in 2024 for curriculum development.
We are proceeding with this and have set this for Tuesday 24th October.
Our thinking is this may present opportunities for parents and also may give some options to alleviate Labour weekend traffic wows.
NB: Labour Weekend is Monday 23rd October.
Huapai + will run a programme on this day for parents requiring support.

Athletics Day

We have been able to reschedule our athletics days that were rained off earlier in the year. The junior event (years 0-4) will be held at school on Friday 27th October. The senior event will be held at the domain on Thursday 2nd November. Details about these events will be attached to next week’s newsletter. The events are both held in the morning.

Centennial Soccer

We have rescheduled our annual Centennial Soccer match vs Taupaki for Wednesday 1st November. Kick off is at the domain at 3:30pm. The teams will remain the same as for the earlier scheduled event.

Last School Donation Prize Draw Of 2023

This year we set a pretty ambitious goal of 78% of parents supporting the school through school donation. Our current status (as at 10th October) is 65.2%, which is up 1.9% from our last update. I remain hopeful we will pass our next goal of 70% before the end of the term.
As a final incentive we are offering a Huapai Plus 50% credit voucher to the value of $100 (i.e. book $200 worth of care and only pay $100) AND 6 bottles of NZ wine, with an additional separate prize of 6 bottles of NZ wine. Bottles of wine sponsored by FujiFilm.

The final prize draw applies to all families who have paid their donations in full by 13th October, with the prize draw notification occurring on 26th October - just in time for Huapai Plus holiday Christmas bookings and the festive season. You can pay your school donation via Hero at the link below.

Thank you so much to those that have already paid their school donation for the 2023 school year. Your contribution to the school is very much appreciated.

New Zealand Girls Junior Rugby Festival
Congratulations to Layla Wood, Tessa Ellis, Maia Peterson, Elliot Chan Chui, Khloe Lean, Piper Chan Chui and Liv Travers who travelled down to Christchurch to participate in the NZ Girls Junior Rugby Festival. These young wahine represented our local Kumeu Rugby Club in the last weekend of Term 3 playing teams from around the country.

Our beautiful Wahine competed in the U11 and U13 Rippa Grades with both teams coming away with just one loss each and winning all their other games. The girls were very excited to play in a big event like this and throughout the tournament they displayed discipline, confidence, whanaungatanga and leadership on and off the field.

A huge congratulations to the following two Huapai girls who were selected for the U11 Rippa Tournament Team:
  • Elliot Chan Chui
  • Maia Peterson
A special mention to Tome Chan Chui (U11 Coach), Melissa Chan Chui (U11 Manager), Russ Wood (U13 Coach) and Telisa Wood (overall coordinator).
Skiing
Noah Yu has excelled in this year's skiing competitions, including the Cardrona Junior Interfield, Coronet Junior Interfield, the Remarkables Junior Interfield, Treble Cone Junior Interfield, Mt Hutt Junior Interfield, and Whakapapa North Island Championships Junior Interfield. His outstanding performance has earned him the first-place position overall in the Junior Interfield Alpine Ski Race Series Under 8yrs category for the entire year nationwide. This overall achievement is based on his exceptional performance in all the Junior Interfield ski races throughout the year, making Noah the top one U8 skier in the entire series nationwide.
