The Connection

Week 2

Term 4

Huapai District School

October 19th 2023

Senior Leadership Message

In our house there is always a race to the diary - whoever’s event gets in there first, wins, the other has to sort the rest of the household. At this time of year the race is even more hectic. There is summer sport starting, there are end of year school prizegivings, there are work events, social events and there are family commitments. If we didn’t write it down, events would be lost and things would be forgotten. It is the same here at school. This is a term where we wind up and up and up as we approach the end of year and there is a LOT of important information as families that you need so as to ensure you don’t miss anything.

There is a real buzz around the school. The blossoms on the tree remind us that the seasons are changing, there is chatter about swimming and sunshine and end of term plans already. It is time to hunt out a school sun hat and keep the drink bottles full. This week the entire school has been involved in First Aid lessons with St John and we will hold a non uniform day in a few weeks time to donate the funds back to St John in order to keep these fantastic sessions free for our students Our school pool opens next week and your child will spend time in the pool weekly learning about water safety. Athletics for the full school is fast approaching as is the Big Sing event. Throw in a few camps, some Christmas events and sporting days and the term is full to overflowing already. We know there is a lot going on and it’s all great stuff! Please keep reading the newsletters as this is our primary means of communication.

Good luck for your race to the diary in your household!

Maree Lloyd
Deputy Principal

Looking Ahead To 2024

As a school, our primary focus is the wellbeing of your child. Staff spend weeks discussing the best placement for your child in 2024, taking into consideration the academic, social and emotional needs of your child as well as those of others.
If you wish to supply any additional information about your child as we work towards 2024, we encourage you to make use of this form.
Please note that the information provided here will be added to a much bigger picture to assist in the class placement process. We cannot guarantee that any / all requests will be able to be met.
This form will close Friday 3rd November.

Teacher Only Day

Tuesday 24th October

Schools were allocated two (2) curriculum days this year and a further 2 in 2024 for curriculum development.
We are proceeding with this and have set this for Tuesday 24th October.
Our thinking is this may present opportunities for parents and also may give some options to alleviate Labour weekend traffic wows.
NB: Labour Weekend is Monday 23rd October.
Huapai + will run a programme on this day for parents requiring support.

Junior Athletics Day

This will be held at school on Friday 27th October.
Click the button below to view all the information including the timetable of events.

Centennial Soccer

We have rescheduled our annual Centennial Soccer match vs Taupaki for Wednesday 1st November. Kick off is at the domain at 3:30pm. The teams will remain the same as for the earlier scheduled event.

Lockdown Practice Last Week

The practice went well last Tuesday. Parents can feel confident in our ability to manage both lockdowns and evacuations. One key point we would make is that we send a message via Hero to parents alerting parents and pointing them to our school website for updates when a real incident occurs.

Leadership Awards

Any student who has completed their leadership award must meet with Maree Lloyd before Monday October 30th in order to meet this year’s deadline for leadership assembly. Leadership awards can be carried over to the following year and awarded retrospectively.

Notice from NZ Rail

Over the next few months KiwiRail staff and contractors will be working on slip remediation on the North Auckland Line (NAL) between Swanson and Whangārei. This means there will be a high presence of rail vehicles travelling on the tracks and through level crossings.

Rail vehicles are specialised dual-mode vehicles that can operate on both the rail tracks and on the road.

Our key safety messages are:
  • Always expect rail vehicles from either direction and at any time.
  • If you are in a car, always slow down as you’re approaching a level crossing and be prepared to STOP.
  • Look out for rail vehicles at all times, and obey signs and signals.
  • Stay off railway tracks and only ever cross the railway at approved level crossings.
