The Connection

Week 4

Term 1

Huapai District School

February 29th 2024

Senior Leadership Message

There is this scene in the movie Schindler's list where Oscar Schindler voices his fear “Have I done enough - I could have done more” in his attempts to save Jews during World War 2. I think we can feel like that with our children. Have I done enough? Could I do more? Often our measures of success are quite temporal and short term. I have learnt that the measures of real success are more so found in things like character, confidence, compassion and commitment (to name a few). We see this outworked every day in your children at our school. I watched on Tuesday a couple of our students appear on the breakfast show telling of their recent Marlin fishing expedition. I marvel at their confidence, and that’s success! We see it in your children being willing to have a go, to offer help and empathy. To stand up and have another go.

We see great things in your children.

We are currently exploring options (programmes) to help children understand their strengths and talents. We have found great success when we pursue a strengths-based approach with children and staff. We think this might have some real benefits for children.

On a different note, thank you for the support we have in the school. Thanks for the volunteers we see in the school, thanks for your financial commitment to the school, and thanks for standing on the sidelines for your kids and cheering them on.

Whatever and wherever this is “it’s enough”.

Have a great week.

John Petrie

Upcoming Events

  • Tuesday 5th March - Family Fun Night

How Can I Help My School This Week?

  • Do you have an orchard? Do you have an excess of windfall fruit? We do not qualify for the fruit in schools promotion but we do have students in need of lunch top ups. We would love to be able to provide fresh fruit. Please contact Maree Lloyd: maree.lloyd@hds.school.nz

School Working Bee

Saturday 2nd March 8.00am - 10.00am (latest)

We take pride in our school and would love to see a few areas of need tended to.

The details of the areas and work involved are outlined in the link below.

We have already 30 parents committed to helping on Saturday. We need at least another 20 to crack all we are aiming to achieve.

Fore registration and further details please see the School Working Bee link.

Children are welcome under your supervision and care.

BBQ at the completion of the working bee.

School Donations

A promotion of this was sent to parents last week.
This makes a huge difference.
Remember your donation qualifies for a 33% rebate (see details below).
Our 2024 target board will be going up shortly.
This breaks down the goals into stages and “rewards” for the students.

Already, we have started the year with a higher percentage of parents who have already paid than in previous years.
We appreciate your donation and support.

As a means of thanking you, every family who has paid their school donation in full by Wednesday 3rd April will automatically go into our Term 1 annual draw. Families with more than 1 child who have paid the family donation will have 2 entries. Details of prize packs will be sent out closer to the draw as we finalise this year's sponsorship.

Paying Your Donation And Claiming Your Tax Rebate

Please note your donation attracts an IRD 33.33% tax rebate which is claimable for this tax year if paid by 31st March 2024.

You can pay your school donations through Hero if paid in full. Alternatively, for part or full payments, you can pay via direct deposit to the school bank account to:

Huapai District School
ASB 12-3659-0025306-00

Or, in the School Office using cash, eftpos or credit card.

Every dollar received through school donations will be used for resources that will touch the hands of your children.

Make Every School Donation Go A Little Further

Ways To Give Gift Your Tax Rebate:

For every donation you make over $5.00 (including the voluntary school donation), you will can obtain a receipt from Hero. With these receipts, you can claim an IRD tax refund of 33.33% of each donated amount at the end of each tax year. You can even choose to regift that credit back to the school, turning every $100 donation into a $133 donation. It's a great way to make your donation go even further and is a huge help!

You can process your donation tax credit online using the tax receipt in your Hero account. It's possible to claim for donations from up to four years ago if you have not already done so.

If claiming online via myIR:
  1. When you arrive on the last page of IRD process, there is an option to 'Credit Transfer'.
  2. The Huapai District School IRD number: 52-914-116.
Alternatively, you can use the IR526 form below, and claim your donations. It is very simple to do:
  1. Print out the IR526 form.
  2. Complete your details on the form.
  3. In the ‘Transferring your tax credit’ section, write Huapai District School in the ‘Name of person receiving the tax credit’ box.
  4. In box 9, write the Huapai District School IRD number: 52-914-116.
  5. In box 10, enter the amount you wish to transfer. You may choose to transfer your total credit to Huapai District School, or just a portion.
  6. Sign and date the form and staple your receipts to the back.
  7. Send your completed form and receipts to the IRD.
Thank you for making an impactful difference to our school.

Family Fun Night

Tuesday 5th March

Due the weather, we postponed until next Tuesday 5th March. Same time, same place with hopefully a great amount of sunshine. Teachers will be in classrooms for a chat and family games on the field. There will be a free bouncy castle obstacle course. We are lucky to have the amazing Justine from Little Tickle Face Painting (donation required here) and bbq sausages for purchase, should you wish. Bring your picnic or takeaways and join in the fun. The very relaxed adults vs children soccer match is always a highlight!

Road Works Station Rd

We have been advised Station Rd will be closed for night works from Sunday 3rd March to 7th March 8.00 pm to 5.00 am.
Residents will still be able to access their properties. However, access to SH16 will only be available via the detour. The traffic management crew onsite will be there to assist residents and travellers.

Breakfast Club - Thank You!

A big thank you to those that have donated a jar of honey to the breakfast club. Your contribution is so appreciated!

The Kumeu Show

The annual Kumeu Show is a large-scale A&P show held at the Kumeu showgrounds. We are keen to promote student entries into the indoor arts and craft sections. Harper won gold with Arm Bar. Jedd received bronze.

Great effort against way more experienced competitors! Harper and Jedd have only been doing this since November.
Liv Travers caught this Marlin off Muriwai on Saturday.
It weighed 139.5kgs and took her an hour to wind in.
She was asked by the AM show on Tuesday morning to go in and be interviewed about her Marlin alongside her brother Cam, and made a big shout out to Huapai school! Well done Liv!
