The Connection

Week 5

Term 1

Huapai District School

March 7th 2024

Senior Leadership Message

The saying ‘many hands make light work’ was very true on the weekend here at school. It was fantastic to see so many committed families join together to make a massive difference to our school environment during our annual working bee.

There were students from all year levels, Mums and Dads and Aunties and Uncles - even neighbours and work mates roped in to lend a hand. We were able to re-mulch our playgrounds, re-timber our grandstand on the basketball courts, repair and repaint walls, revitalise gardens with weed mat and bark, remove rocks and chop chop chop in gardens to ensure the school continues to look really tidy. Thank you most sincerely for working together for the common cause.

When one person cares, it’s great, but when so many of our community care the outcome is really truly impressive. This reminds me of the saying “it takes a village to raise a child”. When we all work together to do a little bit, we are able to achieve magnificent results.

Thank you for all playing your part in the future of our school, its environment, its students and staff.

Maree Lloyd
Deputy Principal

Community Survey

As we mentioned last week, the HDS board has begun our search for a new principal with advice and guidance from the Education Group. We recognise that we have an incredible school community, and we would love to get your input for the kind of person you would like to see leading our school into the future.

Below is a link to a short survey (no more than 10-15 minutes), that will be available to fill out until midday on Monday the 11th of March. Thank you for taking the time to fill it out and share your thoughts with us.

School Bus

The Ministry of Education funds a school bus that runs along the bus route shown below.
This is to capture students that live within our school zone but not within a ‘reasonable’ walking distance, as well as for those that reside in part of our old school zone, also outside of a ‘reasonable’ walking distance to the school. The criteria for those eligible to catch the school bus are outlined in the School Transit Factsheet linked below.

Bus Route TO SCHOOL:
Departure departure from CNR SH16 and Riverhead Rd, ahead to Riverhead Rd, left into Old North Rd, left into Oraha Rd, left into SH16, right onto Access Rd ahead to Tawa Rd, right into Awa Rd, turn at Annett Rd, head back along Awa Rd, left into Tawa Rd, left into Station Rd, drop off at HDS bus stop.

Departure from HDS bus stop, right into Tawa Rd, right into Awa Rd, turn at Annett Rd, head back along Awa Rd, left into Tawa Rd, via Access Rd, right onto SH16, left onto Riverhead Rd, left onto Koraha Rd, right onto Oraha Rd, right onto Old North Rd, right onto Riverhead Rd, left onto SH16, final stop at 460 SH16 (opposite Phil Greig's Strawberry Garden).

If you live along this route, and would like your child to catch the school bus, please email the School Office ( for more information on how they can be added to the bus list.

Please note: this bus route can not be changed to accommodate additional roads. This is a set bus route and students must catch it from somewhere along the route.

Easter Weekend - School Closed

School is closed Friday March 29, Monday April 1st and Tuesday April 2nd

This year Easter Weekend falls outside of the school holidays. The school will be closed for Easter Friday (March 29th), Easter Monday (April 1st) and Easter Tuesday (April 2nd). The rule to close schools on Easter Tuesday was first introduced in 1954. It's unclear why exactly it was introduced, but the holiday has remained in place and is part of the Education Act legislation. Therefore all schools in New Zealand are closed on Easter Tuesday.

Term Attendance

Term attendance so far:
Week 2 - 91%
Week 3 - 90%
Week 4 - 91%
This week - 92%

Every day matters for every child and young person.
All students are required to attend school on time and everyday, unless they are sick. Regularly attending school is essential for a child’s educational growth, as it helps in building and sustaining their learning. It also sets the foundation for positive daily habits and enhances their wellbeing through connection with peers.

Absences for sickness, appointments, lateness or early pick up should be notified by:
Hero app (preferred)
School website (Linked here)
Phone message - 09 412 5042

If arriving late (any time after 9am) or leaving early, all students must sign in/out via the tablet in the school office.

Please notify the school before 9am each day your child is away from school. We do require brief details of your child’s illness to ensure it can be coded correctly. If your child is absent due to an illness for 3 days or more, please provide a doctor’s certificate on request.

The Ministry of Education requires us to follow up if attendance falls below an acceptable level and if there is no further improvement, the attendance services team will be involved (case by case).

Extended absences for holiday or other reason: In the event that your child is going to be absent from school for travel or a holiday during term time, this will be recorded in line with the MOE guidelines as ‘explained, but unjustified’. The absence details must be notified in writing to the School Office at prior to the student’s absence.

Every day your child is in school matters. Let’s keep these numbers over 90%.
