Week 6

Term 1

Huapai District School

March 14th 2024

Senior Leadership Message

The Government's first 100 days are past! I have had Ministry of Education officials, and Education Review Office (ERO) officials all chasing the school to confirm we are compliant with the no cell phones and 1 hour literacy, reading and maths initiatives. I’ve also had a number of conversations with colleagues whose building projects are on hold due to frozen funds. Interesting times!
The best thing Governments could do (in my view) is make education a bipartisan focus! Working together for considered and sound improvement strategies rather than the changing priorities in education.

We have very minimal evidence to suggest those children who bring a cell phone to school use them during the school day. We will not stop cell phones being brought to school. We have modified our policy slightly to place a response of cell phone hand-in and collection daily where and if this becomes an issue. Our experience is our children are responsible.

The worst thing that could happen in schools (again in my view) is classroom programmes becoming deconstructed to neat boxes of one hour. We deliver more than the one hour expectation. We know good quality writing is supported by good quality oral language. “A dialogic approach builds the foundation for communication and literacy development” (Ministry of Education common practice model). We also understand powerful learning in reading, writing and even maths is achieved when it is delivered in an authentic, connected and creative way.

Have a great week.

John Petrie
Principal

School Donation Update

Thank you for the support through your school donation. This year’s support rate is already so much better than last year. We are already at 15%. Our first goal / reward for the children is set at 50%.

Junior Athletics - Tomorrow

Tomorrow is our junior athletics day here at school. Students are reminded to wear their compulsory house t-shirt. If a student doesn’t have a house tee, their school top is expected.
We are hoping for great weather, but in case of postponement, families will be notified through Hero before 8am.

Easter Weekend - School Closed

School is closed Friday March 29, Monday April 1st and Tuesday April 2nd

This year Easter Weekend falls outside of the school holidays. The school will be closed for Easter Friday (March 29th), Easter Monday (April 1st) and Easter Tuesday (April 2nd). The rule to close schools on Easter Tuesday was first introduced in 1954. It's unclear why exactly it was introduced, but the holiday has remained in place and is part of the Education Act legislation. Therefore all schools in New Zealand are closed on Easter Tuesday.

Station Rd Upgrade

Our parking options are becoming less and less. We will lose additional parks as part of our parking spaces will be dug up for services. This is part of the plan and something we need to manage.
We are struggling with parent parking in the bus stop which is required by the school bus. Please leave this space completely free. The overall feedback from the contractors is that the project is going well, the night work has been significant and the support from the community has been really good.

Scout Jamboree Fundraiser

Dear Parents

My name is Mikayla. My friends and I are fundraising for a Scout Jamboree to be held in Australia later this year. Our fundraiser is selling packets of 'Cookie Time’ biscuits. These are sold in packets of 20 for $20.00.

We will be taking orders for these for the next two(2) Fridays - starting tomorrow. 2.45pm- 3.15pm
We will have a table by the entrance to the school (Station Rd).
You will need to complete an order and pay the $20.00.
We will deliver the biscuits to you once they arrive.
This is a Scout Jamboree fundraiser.
See you soon.

This is a new section of our newsletter that is driven by you, our HDS community. While we know some of the amazing things our students get up to, we don’t know everything and this is where we need you to tell us. Do you have an HDS child / team / group that you would like to celebrate in the newsletter for an achievement? Please email 100 words or less and a photo to office@hds.school.nz with the subject line “Beyond the school gates” and we will add it to the weekly newsletter.
