Huapai District School

Senior Leadership Message

This is our final newsletter for 2023. Thank you for all your support, engagement and contribution to making our school what it is.

We have the habit of trying to name our year at the beginning of the year. This is an attempt to look ahead, predict what our year is going to look like or rather, what we want our year to look like. This year we named our year “Reach”. A nautical word which describes the ability of a sailing boat to go faster than the wind. Naming our year “Reach” was a reflection and belief of the things that we had in place or saw in our people and direction that would generate greater speed and impact significantly. We believed we would see a greater sense of progress and achievement as these forces combined. We have had a great year. I would describe it as our best - certainly in my tenure of eight years. There was alignment, clarity, greater consistency and momentum in our classes, our programmes and direction. The feedback from our staff has been really positive in their sense of achievement and success.

As we look to 2024, we say farewell to a number of staff. We have farewelled Cathy Gray who has given 22 years of service to the school - predominantly in the library. We acknowledge and honour Keryn Annan (Deputy Principal) who is following her strengths and passion to work across schools and with teachers in professional development. We also thank and acknowledge Diane Thomas leaving for family reasons and Sineaya Harknett relocating to a school on the Shore.

These last few days are very full.

Thanks again for your support and involvement - it makes our school so much better.

Have a safe and restful holiday break.

Regards,

John Petrie
Principal

Do you have an HDS child / team / group that you would like to celebrate in the newsletter for an achievement? Please email 100 words or less and a photo to office@hds.school.nz with the subject line “Beyond the school gates” and we will add it to the weekly newsletter.

He managed to achieve personal best times in three categories, the 3x3 with a time of 14.43 seconds, the 2x2 with a time of 4.91 seconds and in the 3x3 one handed with a time of 33.23 seconds.
