The Connection

Week 1

Term 1

Huapai District School

February 8th 2024

Senior Leadership Message

So great to see your children back at school. Our place only comes alive when your children are here. A special welcome to our new families as well as a small number of International students staying with us for the first three weeks. We trust you feel welcome and are able to connect. The connection we see across the school is something very special at Huapai.

We especially welcome three new staff to our team, Ashley Ferkins in our Year 7 & 8 team, Briarna Williams in Year 2 and Susan Boniface in Year 1. Great to have such quality people join our school.

Great to see all the hard work of our fundraising (HFN) and school donations outworked in the astro turf. This has really lifted the court area and opportunities for children. Thank you for the effort made in 2023.

Quick heads up… we are planning a working bee Saturday 2nd March, 8.00am - 10.00am. Our working bees are short, sharp and well supported by our community. Details and specific needs will be communicated shortly.

Great to have you and your children back in the school.

John Petrie
Principal

Station Rd Upgrade

Meeting with Fulton Hogan ( contractors) last week. Progress is positive and some significant changes will be occurring in the coming weeks. The Eastern side of Station Rd is now closed to foot traffic. Crossing will be supervised at the depot end of Station Rd. When the works are completed on the eastern side, this will open for students and work will begin on the west side of Station Rd. Thank you for your tolerance and patience as this is underway. Our school gate (Station Rd side) is locked most of the time to prevent people driving through the school to avoid detours.

Community Te Reo Māori Lessons

Our Te Reo Māori lessons start up again next Thursday, fortnightly (even weeks) at 7 pm in Room 8. Nau mai, haere mai, all are welcome. Contact Kirstin Robinson if you need more details at kirstin.robinson@hds.school.nz

Road Patrol

This year children in years 5-8 have the opportunity to be a leader within the school by being a road patroller. The times that we have the Station road and Trigg road crossings patrolled are between 8:30am-8:50am and then again at 2:55pm-3:15pm.
We are keen to get the 2024 roster drawn up as soon as possible. If your child is keen to be a patroller this year, please complete the form linked below.

Family Fun Night - SAVE THE DATE

Tuesday 27th February
One of the traditions in our school is that we start and end the year together as a big school community. We would like to invite you to our family fun night on Tuesday 27th February. Classrooms will be open after school for your child(ren) to show you around, then we all gather on the soccer field for picnic dinner, games and the legendary adults v kids soccer match. It’s a great way to start the year, please add it to your calendar now. More details to follow.

Kickstart Breakfast Club

Our Kickstart Breakfast Club (Weetbix donated by Sanitarium and Milk donated by Anchor) was a huge success last year, with an average of eighteen children coming through every day by Term 4. It is a friendly, social space where many children enjoy starting their day.

2024
  • We have the Weetbix and the milk (thanks to Kickstart).
  • We buy the bread and spreads as a school
  • We have the space (Room 5)
  • We need adult volunteers
We can only provide this opportunity for our students with parent help.

Can you offer 30 minutes once a week? (8.30am/ 8.40am to 9.00am / 9.10am).

Please contact Stephanie at stephanie.wales@hds.school.nz

This does not need to be a long-term commitment - we would love to hear from you if you can help this term.

If you cannot offer half an hour, would you please consider donating a jar of honey (our kids love honey and it is beyond our reach this year). This can be dropped in to the school office.

Swimming Sports

Our swimming sports will be held here at school. All students in years 5-8 are invited to participate and selected top swimmers from years 1-4. This year we will hold our sports over two days. Monday 26th February will be the female swimming sports day and Tuesday 27th will be the male swimming sports day. Seniors (years 5-8) in the morning and juniors (years 1-4) in the afternoon.

Year 7&8 Touch Rugby

We have the opportunity to add a few more players to our year 7-9 touch rugby team for the remaining few weeks. If you are interested in your son or daughter playing, please contact Reece McLeod at: reece@levelltd.co.nz

Welcome Back!

Beyond The School Gates

This is a new section of our newsletter that is driven by you, our HDS community. While we know some of the amazing things our students get up to, we don’t know everything and this is where we need you to tell us. Do you have an HDS child / team / group that you would like to celebrate in the newsletter for an achievement? Please email 100 words or less and a photo to office@hds.school.nz with the subject line “Beyond the school gates” and we will add it to the weekly newsletter.

This Week:
During the break Harper Curtis, Kassie Lean, Piper Stagg-McLeod, Cameron Travers, Lucas Eastgate and Lexi Lagerwall (Support Crew) all represented Riverhead Athletics at the 2024 North Island Colgate Games. Overall each athlete competed really well with multiple Personal Best Results. Harper, Kassie and Piper each collected multiple pennants in their divisions. Our Girls 8 Relay winning Silver in the 4x100m Relay. The team were in good spirits throughout the competition, enjoying some time with fellow schoolmates Olivia Travers and the Chan-Chui family from Waitakere Athletics during the rain intervals.
