The Connection

Week 3 Term 2

Huapai District School

May 16th 2024

Senior Leadership Message

As I’m out on playground duty, as part of my daily commitment, I'm watching kids play and chase each other. Laughter is everywhere. There is a group of girls that have declared a ghost is chasing them and have turned it into a game. Another group is playing a rugged game of soccer on the field and some others are playing badminton on the court in the wind!
As I'm observing all this, I have the Joni Mitchell song, Big Yellow Taxi (a protest song really), racing through my head and the punch line is...

“Don't is always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone?
They paved paradise, put up a parking lot"

I had just returned from a series of meetings with fellow Principals and colleagues involved in education. The stories of managing under massive growth, property funding battles, Government initiatives, challenging behaviours, and unrealistic expectations dominated the conversations. Coming back and standing in the middle of our school brought me back to what is important - children. I love that I can see hope and joy in them.

My reflection of this, is that all actions have consequences, let’s always keep children at the centre. We don't want to lose what we have!

Have a great week

John Petrie

A Note from The Board of Trustees

The search for a new principal following John’s resignation at the end of term 3 is well underway. Working with The Education Group, we have formulated and posted the advertisement for the position online, and this will be live until Saturday the 6th of June. Once we have received all applications, we will begin the process of shortlisting and interviewing candidates, ready for an appointment and start by the beginning of Term 4.

You can get a sneak peak at the online advertisement by clicking the button below.

Tomorrow our school will hold a mufti day supporting Pink Shirt Day.

In Aotearoa, Pink Shirt Day is a day led by the Mental Health Foundation that aims to create schools and workplaces where people feel safe, valued and respected. It is a day to spread aroha and kindness, celebrate diversity and end bullying.

Our students are invited to wear pink to mufti day tomorrow and bring a gold coin to donate to this worthy cause. We hope to see our school transformed into a sea of pink for Pink Shirt Day!

Scholastic Book Fair - Last Day Tomorrow

    Teacher only Day

On Tuesday 7th May schools were advised that two teacher only days were allocated to schools to assist in the curriculum changes and priorities of the Government. We were not aware of this and have been directed that this must occur between 27th May and 7th June. An additional day has been directed to occur between 21st October and 15th November. We appreciate this does not necessarily make things easy for our community and have tried to limit the impact by attaching this to Kings Birthday weekend.
Huapai+ will be available for child supervision.
Our school will be closed for children on Friday 13th May & Monday 3rd June (Kings Birthday public holiday).

MOREPORK - Memphis in May Festival

Morepork donates $5 from each ticket sale to a local school, as chosen by customers. Last year our school won this and received $2,000, which we put towards the new astroturf you see around the school.

We have entered into the draw again for this years Morepork Memphis In May Festival fundraiser, and will put the funds towards new sun sails if we win again this year.

The more tickets that sell, the more money there will be in the pot for a school to win! Kids 12 and under will receive free entry.

    Kumeū Rugby relay team

On Saturday evening Kumeu Rugby were lucky enough to be chosen to run at half time in the Blues vs Hurricanes game at Eden Park. The relay involved 10 different rugby clubs and intermediate schools throughout the blues region. It was a winner takes all, with a $10,000 prize money going to the winning team. Andre Lister and Chase Hopping were part of the squad that ran.

The boys smashed the opposition and came home with the cheque. It was an amazing moment for these young men and their teammates, something they will all remember for the rest of their lives, 27,000 people cheering them on, and then winning , being interviewed by the media, having numerous photos taken, they were all celebrities for a short time there. There were a few Huapai Students in the crowd cheering the team on which was so awesome to see, and the many texts and vids afterwards the boys received from school mates.
A link to the relay video can be found here on facebook.
