The Connection

Week 4 Term 2

Huapai District School

May 23rd 2024

Senior Leadership Message

It was great to have lots of parents in the school last week. Thank you for your support and engagement. Also thank you for the manner in which you are dealing with the Station Rd upgrade. It is frustrating but the result will be such an improvement for the safety of both our parents and children.

On Tuesday we had our seniors involved in a sports competition, the previous week a group competing in a chess competition. In both circumstances to see not only their success but also their character shine was a real treat. People talk so positively about our kids when they go out to events.

At our school we focus on what we call our 6 C’s (character, citizenship, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication). It is a real delight to see these core competencies evident and outworked in our students.

Have a great week,
John Petrie

Attendance Update

In April 2024, the Government announced a regular attendance target of 80 percent of students to be present for more than 90% of the term by 2030. Another key area we could improve is in getting to school on time.

Attendance is defined as:
This is our Data from Term 1:

Clearing Bell 3:15pm

Recently, we have been dealing with a number of situations where children are playing after school unsupervised and involved in injury. We also have had situations where even under supervision the impact on office staff about to leave in supporting injury is becoming a more common experience.

We ask that you do not bring your children to school before 8:30am and we ask that you collect your child at 3.00pm. From next week, we will introduce a 3:15pm clearing bell. This will assist those families whose children want “just one more turn” on the playground by having a definitive end time. It will also assist our Huapai Plus team to more easily identify which children are staying behind each day and Garry to be able to carry out property maintenance safely.

We ask that all parents and children leave the grounds at this time. Children arriving before 8:30am and children who are on grounds after 3:15pm will be taken to Huapai+ for supervision and you will be invoiced.

Teacher Only Day

Friday 31st May

On Tuesday 7th May schools were advised that two teacher only days were allocated to schools to assist in the curriculum changes and priorities of the Government. We were not aware of this and have been directed that this must occur between 27th May and 7th June. An additional day has been directed to occur between 21st October and 15th November.

We appreciate this does not necessarily make things easy for our community and have tried to limit the impact by attaching this to Kings Birthday weekend.

Huapai Plus will be available for child supervision (book below).
Our school will be closed for children on Friday 31st May & Monday 3rd June (Kings Birthday public holiday).

Change of Clothes

Can you please ensure that your child is coming to school with a spare change of clothes (uniform if possible) in their bag, in case a change is needed throughout the day. While we do have a few spare items in the School Office, these are for First Aid emergencies only. If your child requires a change of clothes but does not have one, we may need to call you to come and collect them or to bring a change of clothes in.

MOREPORK - Memphis In May Festival

Morepork donates $5 from each ticket sale to a local school, as chosen by customers. Last year our school won this and received $2,000, which we put towards the new astroturf you see around the school.

We have entered into the draw again for this years Morepork Memphis In May Festival fundraiser, and will put the funds towards new sun sails if we win again this year.

The more tickets that sell, the more money there will be in the pot for a school to win! Kids 12 and under will receive free entry.

Tough Guy And Gal Challenge

Our school enters a large group each year. This year we will participate in the event held on TUESDAY 6th August. Please use the link below to register your child online. Please indicate on the form for “teacher to collect” as this links all our registrations together.

Huapai Boys Barefoot Tackle Rugby Tournament

On Sunday 19th May 13 Huapai Boys had an early start out at Bruce Pullman Park where they participated in a barefoot tackle rugby tournament run by the Barbarians Rugby Club.

They played 3 teams from all over Auckland. Forrest Hill Primary, Leabank Primary & Glendowie Primary. The boys played extremely well and managed to come away with 3 wins!
Shout out to Russ Wood for coaching the boys.

As an added extra bonus these boys were then invited to North Harbour Stadium on Monday to tour the Moana Pasifika rugby team’s facilities and watch them at training. What an awesome experience for these very lucky boys! Special mention to Peter White for taking the time to show us around.

Thanks to Russ Wood, Sarah Bristow & Kelly Eastgate for chaperoning the boys on this adventure. Also big thank you to Maree Lloyd for doing all the behind the scenes paperwork needed for trips/tournaments like this!
