The Connection

Week 7 Term 2

Huapai District School

June 13th 2024

Senior Leadership Message

I am reading a book at the moment called "Stolen Focus" by Johanni Hari. There is one chapter "The confinement of our children" that took me back to two particularly events that happened in my childhood:
  1. My brother and I rode our bikes (no gears in my time!) from Blenheim, our home town, to Picton. Once we were there, we rode all around the area. It was such an adventure. Our father picked us up late in the day and brought us home.
  2. A second memory was being dropped high up the Wairau river (again with my brother) and paddling our way down the river. This time our father was following us down the river in the car. I have so many memories of playing all day, in the street, with the neighbours, in the trees behind our house and staggering coming home at dusk.
I read about a school that, for one day (Global Play Day), decided to fill their classes with stuff to play with. They filled rooms with boxes, Lego, old toys, just stuff!, and then said to the kids “Go play”. Some launched themselves into it and played with glee. Interestingly there was a larger group who stood back and watched, not sure what to do. One even went to a corner and fell asleep!

The epiphany… the teachers realised the kids had never been set free to play, “their attention had been constantly managed for them by adults for their whole lives”.

Things that make you go “hmmm”

Attendance Update

In April 2024, the Government announced a regular attendance target of 80 percent of students to be present for more than 90% of the term by 2030. Another key area we could improve is in getting to school on time.

Here is where we are tracking based on last weeks data:

New Zealand Weekly School Rate is = 90.8%

Huapai District School = 77.2%

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP THE SCHOOL THIS WEEK...

Mud run marshalls - the school can earn $3200 for learning resources

This is our annual shout out for volunteers!

The role involves roughly 3 hours of your time at the annual Tough Guy and Gal challenge held at the Kumeu showgrounds.
Anyone over 16 years old can help us. Grannies, Grampas, older siblings, friends and neighbours!
Your role involves pointing the way for the children running. It is very low impact and great fun. No previous experience is required.

Please click the button below to say yes please to helping the school.
When your child’s class has 5 people registered, they will earn a hot chip lunch.

Tough Guy And Gal Challenge

Our school enters a large group each year. This year we will participate in the event held on TUESDAY 6th August. Please use the link below to register your child online. Please indicate on the form for “teacher to collect” as this links all our registrations together.

Change of Clothes

Can you please ensure that your child is coming to school with a spare change of clothes (uniform if possible) in their bag, in case a change is needed throughout the day. While we do have a few spare items in the school office, these are for first aid emergencies only. If your child requires a change of clothes but does not have one, we may need to call you to come and collect them or to bring a change of clothes in.

Cut off times for EOTC trips/events

Please ensure your child is at school (at least) 10 minutes before the departure for all EOTC trips/events, so we can check off all of our Health & Safety and attendance record requirements prior to departure.

Please note: Students cannot be dropped directly to the venues. Any child/student who arrives late will remain at school and be assigned to another class for the day.

Beyond The School Gates...

KATIE LEAN played for the MK Rangers on Saturday. No age limit on stepping out of your comfort zone! A great role model for her own girls and the Tackle girls that she also coaches.
NIKOLA VIDAKOVIC will be performing in an amazing show: "Encore's 5th Birthday Party: A Concert!" on Saturday, 29th June at 2pm and 7.30pm at the Bruce Mason Theatre, Takapuna.

This spectacular event will showcase 30 musical numbers, drawing from our beloved past productions as well as featuring bonus musical theatre hits. The concert will feature a diverse and talented cast of 100 performers, aged 9 to 25.

It’s going to be an amazing night of music and celebration. Come out and support Nikola!
