The Connection

Week 9

Term 1

Huapai District School

April 4th 2024

Senior Leadership Message

Great to have good weather over Easter. Unusual to have Easter as a separate time from the school term break. I trust you managed to find some time to have a break. Whether Easter falls during the school break or during the term, the requirement for all schools is to be open the standard total of days open (384 half days).

I had the unique (and very privileged) opportunity to take some leave before Easter. There was considerable data presented to the Government based on Principal’s well-being, the impacts of managing a school over the last few years, and the issues of retention and recruitment of staff, particularly to Principal positions. The Government responded with a small allocation of funds to schools to be used for Principal's well-being. I presented to the Board that my preference was to go walking as a strategy for well-being. In the space of 8 days, I walked the Routeburn and Milford tracks.

I think finding a place where you can be present in an environment that refreshes is really important. I am grateful for the opportunity to do this and appreciate the Board's support, as well as the team here who covered my absence.

Having said that, it is great to be back in school and finishing the term together.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement with our school.

John Petrie

Netball Year 1 & 2

We are on the lookout for several players to join our Year 1&2 netball team. The team plays each Saturday morning at approximately 9am in Helensville. Fees for the season are $55. Please email maree.lloyd@hds.school.nz if you are interested. We may need to withdraw this team if we are unable to find more players.

Barbarians Rugby Day

The annual Barbarian’s Rugby Day will again be held at Bruce Pullman Park in Takanini on Sunday May 19th. This is a 10 aside barefoot rugby tournament for year 5&6 students under 50kg. We are able to enter a team of 15 players. First 15 to register. If your child is interested in being involved, please use the link below to register them. Please note that this event is purely parent driven, no teacher will be present on the day. There is no cost for this event.

Please advise school if you’re interested by the end of term. We have to submit paperwork and meet the cut off for school registration in order for you to go.

Does your child excel strongly in a sport? Are you interested in them participating in the National Aims Games? In the past we have had swimmers, mountain bikers and a basketball team enter.

Competitors must be over 10 years of age and under 13 years of age, as at 31 December the year before the tournament year. Competitor’s birthdates will be required on school registration documentation. For the 2024 Zespri AIMS Games, this means the accepted birth years are: 2011, 2012 and 2013. The link below will take you to the 2024 Aims Games booklet.

Please note, the school does not send a staff member to this event, arrange transport or accommodation. ALL associated costs with this tournament are up to individual families. If you wish to register your child for an event, please contact maree.lloyd@hds.school.nz

Beyond The School Gates

This is a new section of our newsletter that is driven by you, our HDS community. While we know some of the amazing things our students get up to, we don’t know everything and this is where we need you to tell us. Do you have an HDS child / team / group that you would like to celebrate in the newsletter for an achievement? Please email 100 words or less and a photo to office@hds.school.nz with the subject line “Beyond the school gates” and we will add it to the weekly newsletter.

This week:
The Kumeu Under 12s (including our own Chase Hopping and ex Huapai student Troy Peterson) came out on top at Ponsonby Rugby Club’s 150th Jubilee Tournament on Good Friday. Coached by Bryce Lehndorf and Russell Wood, the boys were amped with their win in the first run of the season! #upthemu
