The Connection

Week 10

Term 1

Huapai District School

April 11th 2024

Senior Leadership Message

Thank you for your involvement and support over this term. It is a real delight (and an element of real pride for me) to see how your children engage in both the school culture and their learning. We can learn a lot from our children.

I think there is going to be an interesting debate in the coming months as schools seek to respond to and review attendance expectations. I thought I would share with you the data we have.

The NZ-wide data shows 45.9% (Term 3 2023 data) of students met the criteria for regular attendance i.e. going to class 90% of the time. This amounts to 1 day a fortnight away. At our school, our data was 49.6% attending (Term 3 2023) - previous terms it ranged from 50.4% to 53%.

Of the 49.6% of students not reaching the target of attending 90% of the time, 59% was due to sickness, 23% was due to holidays, 3% justified absence and the balance (15%) were unexplained. Truancy is not an issue for our school. Holidays are a big part of our data. If you widen the data to include students who are here 80% of the time this equates to 84% of students. Our comparative data shows our school is the same as other Auckland schools. Our overall attendance is 88.3%, i.e. on any given day we have an average of 88% of our children present.

Given the current comments and media releases regarding student behaviour, student achievement, and now student attendance, I think this is going to draw us all into discussions around what value we place on education.

I trust you manage to find some time over the school break for your children.

John Petrie
Principal

Does your child excel strongly in a sport? Are you interested in them participating in the National Aims Games? In the past we have had swimmers, mountain bikers and a basketball team enter.

Competitors must be over 10 years of age and under 13 years of age, as at 31 December the year before the tournament year.
