The Connection

Week 2 Term 2

Huapai District School

May 9th 2024

Senior Leadership Message

Two weekends ago I went tramping with friends. The transport, hut booking, food, warm clothes, boots and packs were all sorted and we felt confident that we were off on a great adventure. About 45 minutes in, we were met with a rock face and a chain for us to use to climb. There was no alternative - we had to scale this obstacle to carry on our journey.

There were mixed reactions. Some talks were had. Some nerves were shared. A plan was formed. Together we found a way, supported each other and we celebrated our success at the top.

When we reflected on our weekend away in the car ride home, we all felt that the chain climb was a defining moment and one that we grew from in different ways.

It makes me smile when I see the way students, staff and community all come together at various times in the face of a shared challenge. There are always mixed reactions, talks are had, nerves are shared and plans formed. Together as a HDS community we find a way, we support each other and we celebrate our success. This term as we focus on our 6C Critical Thinking - Whaiwhakaaro with our students, we thank you for encouraging and role modelling for your children the ability to think of different strategies when faced with a challenge and to recognise the growth that comes from a challenge.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you in school next Thursday afternoon, perhaps we can trade tramping stories?!

Maree Lloyd
Deputy Principal

We were not aware of this and have been directed that this must occur between 27th May and 7th June. An additional day has been directed to occur between 21st October and 15th November.

As you know, our guiding values are our 6Cs. Citizenship, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Character and Creativity. Here are some precautions to take when crossing the road:
  • Look towards oncoming traffic.
  • Never assume a driver has seen you when you are about to cross the road, its your responsibility to save yourself.
  • Avoid crossing the road where drivers may not be able to see you.
  • Wait for a suitable gap in the traffic flow before crossing the road.
  • Use the pedestrian crossing where available.

Pink Shirt Day Mufti Friday 17 May

On Friday 17th of May, our school will hold a mufti day supporting Pink Shirt Day.

In Aotearoa, Pink Shirt Day is led by the Mental Health Foundation that aims to create schools and workplaces where people feel safe, valued and respected. It is a day to spread aroha and kindness, celebrate diversity and end bullying.

Next Friday our students are invited to wear pink to mufti day and bring a gold coin to donate to this worthy cause. We hope to see our school transformed into a sea of pink for Pink Shirt Day!

MOREPORK - Memphis in May Festival

Morepork donates $5 from each ticket sale to a local school, as chosen by customers. Last year our school won this and received $2,000, which we put towards the new astroturf you see around the school.

We have entered into the draw again for this years Morepork Memphis In May Festival fundraiser, and will put the funds towards new sun sails if we win again this year.

The more tickets that sell, the more money there will be in the pot for a school to win! Kids 12 and under will receive free entry.

Breakfast Club Update

Thanks to your continued support of our breakfast club, we have enough honey to last the whole term, if not longer!
If anyone wishes to donate this term, we would welcome jam or peanut butter or small quantities of fruit if you have an oversupply.

We are always happy to hear from anyone who would like to join our amazing breakfast club team. Please email Stephanie Wales

For new families, breakfast club is open every morning in Room 5 from 8.30 to 8.55.
All welcome!

Beyond The School Gates

This is a new section of our newsletter that is driven by you, our HDS community. Do you have an HDS child / team / group that you would like to celebrate in the newsletter for an achievement? Please email 100 words or less and a photo to office@hds.school.nz with the subject line “Beyond the school gates” and we will add it to the weekly newsletter.

This week:

Jedd & Harper Robinson

Jedd & Harper competed in the Oceania Jiu Jitsu competition during the holidays, the toughest of the Calendar. Jedd received Gold and Harper received Silver, although she lost with an illegal rear choke but as there was no video evidence the final places stood. They both moved up to Grey/White belts as a result.

Dylan Butt, Jake Weir & Teigue Killeen...

Dylan Butt, Jake Weir and Teigue Killeen, together with their Academy Black team, represented the West Coast Rangers in the Northern Rovers 9th Grade Football Tournament. Eight teams from the Auckland region participated in the tournament. Academy Black played a total of 5 games, each with skill, drive and determination. The team drew their final game for 3rd/4th place, which went into a penalty shootout and resulted in a win taking 3rd place in the tournament. Well done!
