The Connection

Week 9 Term 2

Huapai District School

June 27th 2024

Senior Leadership Message

46 years working in schools, 26 years as a Principal, and now I have one term left!
I suspect my newsletter comments over this final term are going to get pretty reflective.

Of all my time, these last 5 years have been my proudest. Not because of achievements (as such) but of the people and culture we have built at our school. I have always believed that teachers work best and schools perform best when the school is characterised by loose connections structurally and tight connections culturally. I have seen teachers fly when given room, support and trust.

I am incredibly proud of the culture we have at Huapai, and the level of commitment to children and learning. My greatest joy (and this is where legacy kicks in) is in the rise of leadership and influence across the school by so many!
He Tāngata, He Tāngata, He Tāngata!
It is people, it is people, it is people!

Have a great week

John Petrie
Principal

Attendance Update

In April 2024, the Government announced a regular attendance target of 80 percent of students to be present for more than 90% of the term by 2030. Another key area we could improve is in getting to school on time.

Here is where we are tracking based on last weeks data:

New Zealand Weekly School Rate is = 91.3%

Huapai District School = 77.8%

Leaving Staff

At the end of this term we will be saying farewell to Jo Redman, Deidre Neill and Briarna Williams.

Jo Redman (Studio 7A) has been with the school for 8 years and has been a tower of strength and confidence in our junior school. Jo is leaving to follow a real strength and interest. Jo will be working for the Ministry of education assisting parents who are struggling to transition their children to school from pre school.

Deidre Neill (Studio 1A) is relocating to Pukekohe to be closer to family. We have really appreciated the skill and depth Deidre has brought to the school.

Briarna Williams (Studio 1B) will be taking maternity leave from the end of the term.

STORY OF THE STRAY CAT

Last week outside my classroom of Room 10, the children noticed a stray cat, who needed some love and support. We had not seen him before, and he snook away shortly after. But as I returned after school from a meeting, I was blown away by the number of families who came back up to school with treats and care to find this little kitty who needed some help. One of our amazing families took the little one to be checked at the vets.
As a teacher, I am always energised by the kindness, generosity and love we receive from our community. Huapai School families are a special crew. We are lucky to have you.
And if you were one of the families that came back to help, thank you, to you and your amazing child who alerted you to the fact that someone needed help that day. Louise

HUGE THANKS FROM CYSTIC FIBROSIS NZ

We just want to give a big shoutout to everyone who bought Chocky Fish and helped raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand during CF Awareness Month.

In May, one of our amazing school families set up shop at the school gates, selling those delicious Chocolate Fish.
With lots of hungry customers, they managed to raise over $200! Thanks to everyone who bought a fish and donated some extra $. We can't wait to do it all again next May!
